WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

- Carthage earned their first win beginning 2017 with a 1-0 record

- The win marks the second season in the row in which the Red Men have opened with a win.

- Sophomores Freddy Martinez and Kevin Reilly notched two goals in the 7-1 score.

Despite the effects of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, and the sickness of some of Carthage's top players, the Red Men completed their annual preseason training trip, with a win in Dallas against the Crusaders of Dallas Christian University.

Freddy Martinez opened the scoring column for the Red Men with the first goal in the seventh minute of play. Martinez also padded his statistical efforts with three assists, and seven points. Martinez would trade a goal with Kevin Reilly following his first goal as a Red Men in the fifteenth minute; Martinez would score again in the 32nd minute boosting the Red Men to 3-0 before the end of the first half.

Upperclassmen Alberto Eloyza and Jamie Tausend would also contribute to scoring both scoring one goal each. Senior Erik Boese also contributed to the statistical effort with an assist.

The match also marked the collegiate debut for newcomers including Richard Flores who notched a goal in the 85th minute of play. Other players who made their debut on the statistics sheet include AJ Abara, Jerry Patino, and Todd Dombrowski.

The match also marked the return of goalkeeper Niko Mavrogiannis, following a premature end in 2016 due to injury. Mavrogiannis earned the win as starting net minder, collecting one save against the Crusaders.

Additionally, team captain Kevin Mahoney also returned to form following a premature end to injury collecting three shots, with one shot on goal.

The Red Men return to the lakefront for their home opener against Kalamazoo College Tues, Sept. 5th. The match also marks the first time the Red Men will compete on the newly renovated Art Keller Field.
