Red Men to Welcome Three Teams for Battle on the Border

Carthage College Men’s Soccer (2-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) returns to Art Keller Field after Tuesday’s home opener against Kalamazoo College, for their annual Battle on the Border Invitational. A program staple since the inception of Carthage soccer, the Red Men will host Hope College, The University of Chicago, and St. Norbert College Friday, September 8th, and Saturday, September 9th.
THE TEAMS
Host No. 22 Carthage is 2-0 on the season following their season opening match versus Dallas Christian College and home opener against Kalamazoo College.
No. 9 University of Chicago is 2-0 on the season following wins against Whitworth University and Knox College. Carthage holds a 3-3-1 all-time record against the Maroons.
Hope College is 1-1 on the season following two home contests against Lake Forest College and Ohio Wesleyan University. Carthage holds a 1-0 all-time record against the Flying Dutchmen.
St. Norbert College is 1-1 on the season following away contests against No. 3 The University of St. Thomas and Macalester College. Carthage will not compete against the Green Knights due to a scheduled match later in the month.
LAST TIME OUT
The Red Men secured a home opening win on Tuesday, Sept. 5 against Kalamazoo College by a 4-1 decision. Four different Red Men scored during the match.
Freshman-eligible Kevin Reilly leads the offense after three goals, two assists, and eight points. Sophomore Freddy Martinez has also earned eight points in two games after scoring two goals and notching four assists.
In two matches, Brayan Arce Justiniano and Niko Mavrogiannis have split time in the net sharing three saves, and two goals against.
MILESTONE WATCH
Senior Johnny Rimkus’s 18 goals are one goal shy of taking the sole eighth spot on the all time Carthage Career list which is held with Brian Santella, ‘07.
Senior Jamie Tausend is tied for sixth with 12 assists on the Carthage career assists list with Greg Pignataro, '11.
Tausend is also 14 starts shy of having the most starts by a Carthage player, a record currently held by Max Zbilut, ‘06 (74 starts).
Brayan Arce Justiniano ranks 7th all time on the career saves list following his freshman campaign with 60 saves in 17 games. Justiniano is 6 saves shy of 6th.
Niko Mavrogiannis ranks 9th all time on the career saves list with 43.
THINGS TO KNOW
Head coach Steve Domin is in his 22nd season as Carthage men’s soccer head coach. Domin holds a overall 220-159-35 record in his tenure as head coach.
Carthage was ranked #22 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Varsity Poll.
The 2017 team captains are seniors Tausend and Rimkus, and juniors Kevin Mahoney and Adrian Herrera.
In addition to Rimkus and Tausend, the 2017 season features a senior class of Erik Boese, Joey Klawitter, and Sahr Mahoney.
