WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The match was the first shut out of the 2017 season for the Red Men
- Three different freshmen scored their first career goal in the match
- Brayan Arce Justiniano notched three saves in his first shut out win of the season.
Following two road matches, the Carthage Men's Soccer Team (4-2-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), returned to Art Keller Field and earned a shut out win against University of Wisconsin - Whitewater (3-3-2).
The match began as a back and forth affair for the first 38 minutes of the match as the Red Men would trade shots on goal with the visiting Warhawks. It was not until Kevin Mahoney's corner kick that the ball would connect with Kevin Reilly and Jamie Tausend before Forward Luke Schoffstall placed the finishing touch in the 39th minute.
"We wanted to make a statement tonight and show that we wouldn't be shut out again in the season and move forward. Whether it's winning by 1 or by 10, that's success for us" said Schoffstall following the win.
Following the half time intermission, the Red Men would notch another goal by Kevin Penarrieta off an assist from AJ Abara in the 52nd minute. The Warhawks would continue to push the offensive, as both teams made multiple rotations throughout the match. However, just as Warhawk goalie Chris Lucatorto blocked a shot by Danny Eloyza, Eloyza connects on the rebound to score another goal for Carthage in the 70th minute.
"It felt really good to score for the team, and I know I have to keep working hard especially because we have a lot of older players who are skilled too. They work really hard in practice and I know that means I have to work even harder," said Penarrieta.
Goalkeeper Justiniano earned the win between the pipes collecting three saves in the full 90 minutes.
The match signified the fourth to last match before conference play commences; the Red Men will travel to Atlanta for two matches followed by traveling to St. Norbert College.
"We're preparing one game at a time, especially with conference coming up soon and we want to really be prepared. We're going to continue to work hard and together," said Eloyza.
Carthage will travel to Atlanta for two non-conference matches against Emory University and Berry College. Kick off for Berry will be Sat., Sept. 23 at Noon (Central Time). The Red Men will then compete against Berry College Sun., Sept. 24 at Noon (Central Time).
