On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Carthage College Men's Soccer team (5-5-1, 0-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) fell in overtime to North Central College (4-5-1, 1-0 CCIW). This was the second match this season with an overtime loss with a final 1-0 score.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the contest, with the Red Men recording 25 shots, seven on goal. Carthage also held an advantage on corner kicks, while North Central lead the match in saves.
The Red Men's best opportunity for a goal, was in the 48th minute in which the Red Men were awarded a penalty kick following a foul on North Central. Adrian Herrera took the shot, however, Neill O'Connor denied the chance and saved the shot.
The two teams would then continue back and forth into overtime as both teams were held scoreless. The second overtime period, however, North Central's Gavin Sanchez was found open on the left side, and took a lob shot towards the high right corner, ending the match with a 1-0 score for the Cardinals.
Niko Mavrogiannis earned the start in goal and collected three saves during the match. Mavrogiannis's three saves solidified the eight spot on the Career Saves List, now at 59 saves in three seasons.
The Red Men return on the road for their second CCIW match against Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.
