The Red Men (6-5-1, 1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) bounced back with a 2-1 win over Wheaton College (4-7, 0-2 CCIW) at Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night.
"This was a great CCIW soccer match, a little bit of everything. I think we may have needed it more coming off a few loses where we flat out dominated opponents but came up empty," said Men's Soccer Head Coach Steve Domin.
The Red Men continued their statistical dominance with 13 shots (10 on goal), and six corner kicks. The Red Men scoring offensive started with a goal from Ivan Esquivel in the 12th minute off a steal from Wheaton goalkeeper Hasten Biddlecome. Kevin Mahoney would add to the first half scoring in the 34th minute off a header from Jeff Montemayor.
The match would continue the back and forth affair with both sides, Wheaton lead in fouls 15-10, and the two teams tied in yellow cards with three each.
"We put so much pressure on their backs this could have turned into a laugher if we could have put one more on the board in the first half. Credit to Wheaton, they kept it close, and threw everyone forward the last 20 minutes of the match and we were just playing for counters," said Domin.
Brayan Arce Justiniano earned the start at goalkeeper collecting five saves off of 15 shots faced. Justiniano's five saves brings him two goals closer to the Top Five on the Career Saves List. The only goal Wheaton scored came two minutes left in the match.
"[Justiniano] and the back line bent but didn't break in a tough place to win," said Domin.
The Red Men return to Art Keller Field for a non-conference bout against Silver Lake College Fri, Oct. 6th.
