WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- This is the second tie of the season for the Red Men, and the first in conference action.
- Carthage has only been the second team in the conference to score against North Park in 2017.
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Carthage College Red Men (7-5-2, 1-1-1, College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) were put to the test against an undefeated conference rival in #12 North Park University (9-1-1, 5-0-1 CCIW) at Art Keller Field. Despite strong offensive efforts from both teams, the Red Men and the Vikings were held to a 2-2 draw following two overtime periods.
"This game reminded me of CCIW games of old. Great teams, on any night, with a tidal wave of emotion. Frankly started slow as we gifted a turn-over to a well placed first shot on goal for them," said Head Coach Steve Domin.
The Vikings kicked off the scoring affair with an off the post shot in the 14th minute by Carel Kuzona. Before the end of the first half, Adrian Herrera was designated to score the penalty kick following a foul by Jason Gonzalez in the 26th minute.
By the second half, both teams were on the hunt for the game winning goal. The Red Men had found an advantage in a free kick by Jerry Patino, which converted to a goal in the 46th minute. However, the Vikings found an equalizer by Gonzalez in the 55th minute. The match would then go into two overtime periods both teams not having scored, despite the multiple scoring opportunities made by the Red Men.
"The match was without fireworks as the chances increased late. I thought we were going to sneak in a couple at the end. Nick Messineo had a nice finish to the game," said Domin.
Niko Mavrogiannis held down the net making two saves in the contest.
North Park edged Carthage in corner kicks 6-5, and Shots 15-14 both team tying with four Shots On Goal. Carthage earned more fouls than North Park during the match 24-17.
"Although we are disappointed with the result, we will take a tie right now. Especially so injured. We have been on the wrong side of a handful of games we dominated but didn't result. Today we probably only played about 45 minutes of Carthage Soccer, and the other half we absorb being stretched by a team with pace," said Domin.
The Red Men are back on the road for a CCIW match against Milikin University at Decatur, Ill. Kick off is expected to be at 6 PM.
