As the hunt for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin post-season berth continues, the Carthage College Red Men (8-6-2, 2-2-1 CCIW) earned a shut out win against Elmhurst College (7-6-2, 2-4 CCIW) at Art Keller Field.
"It was great to be in our element and to earn this win as a team. We're still on the hunt for a post-season bid but this match showed that we're a major contender," said midfielder Adrian Herrera.
Jerry Patino and Herrera lead the offensive with two goals a piece. Kevin Reilly also notched a goal, with Jamie Tausend and Ivan Esquivel earning assists.
"It's my job as a striker to earn those scoring opportunities, so to be able to get the through-balls and score makes me happy because I know, I did my part to help the team," said Patino.
Patino started the scoring with an assist from Tausend as he slide the ball off the post in the tenth minute of the match. Reilly then notched another goal for the Red Men seven minutes later off a ricochet ball from Esquivel, past the goal line. Herrera sealed the deal with a third goal in the first half off a rebound shot in the 23rd minute of play.
However, that did not stop the Red Men as the scoring continued with another goal by Herrera in the 53rd minute, after Kevin Penarrieta earned a penalty kick. Patino notched the final goal for the Red Men five minutes later off a pass from Kevin Mahoney.
Niko Mavrogiannis started the match between the pipes, earning the win for the Red Men with two saves. The match is Mavrogiannis's second shut out win on the season.
The Red Men will have a packed weekend with two matches: a CCIW contest against Illinois Wesleyan University and a non-conference contest versus St. Olaf College.
